Why the iPhone will change every device in your pocket

The revolution is coming.
The iPhone will be out in a few hours and it will change every device on earth.
Why am I saying so? Let's give a look at this new Apple product.

The biggest innovation that the iPhone brings is certainly the revolutionary multi-touch interface; this innovative technology makes touch-screens much more natural to use. For example: if you want to resize an image you can simply "pinch" an area of the screen or, if you want to type a capitalized "m", you simply press SHIFT+m. It might sound obvious, but this has never been possible with "normal" touch screens!

This amazing invention is already drawing the way for the future: for instance Microsoft has demoed Surface, a multitouch table to be used in restaurants, pubs,... (oh yeah, copying again).
I am quite sure that multitouch will be the favourite input method for future devices.

Another great feature of the iPhone is the screen: no keyboard, no strange buttons,... just the screen which shows a pertinent number of buttons; for example the keyboard appears only when you need to type a text and doesn't show buttons that you are not going to use (for example the space bar when typing URLs).
This is going to be the standard for future handlend devices. Think of smartphones, mobile phones, MP3 players: their screens are getting bigger and buttons are becoming fewer.
It is already happening.

But the feature that truly makes the iPhone a powerful device is the software: OS X.
Yeah: not OS X mobile but OS X itself!!
This is giving the iPhone a huge potential; virtually anything is possible on OS X; so the iPhone is going to be the only device which can bring personal computer's power into such a small device.
And the integration between applications is just amazing (watch this if you don't believe me!).

The iPhone might not be perfect on its first release but it is clearly drawing a path: every device (even the iPod) will change to become more similar to the iPhone.
You're right, the right word for it is revolution.

Dedicated to my friend "wisher": this is going to make you buy an iPhone.

You are truly a Mac-user. Microsoft is not copying multi-toch display, the tecnology is not the same and Microsoft only realize software to make the technology usable.
OS X is a good thing but I think Windows Mobile, Symbian and other OSs can do the same things and also permit the use of Java and other important technology that iPhone doesn't support. Moreover, how can we use OS X apps if we have no SDK to port our apps (x86 or PPC) to iPhone architecture?

iPhone is a closed platform... I need more if I decide to buy a smart-phone!

I was joking: it just was extremely strange to see M$ working on the same kind of technology at the same time of Apple.

I said that the iPhone has a huge potential: Apple's decisions will make it the greatest platform ever or just another closed platform.
I hope they will provide an SDK; at present only web-based applications can be developed.
It's a start (not enough of course) and a lot can be created with web 2.0; but an iPhone SDK could be the real killer-app.

I also think that everyone will follow Apple, trying to bring the power of desktop OS to handled devices.

At present I can see four great advantages of the iPhone over the competitors:
- very fast and optimized OS (from david pogue review)
- tight integration between apps
- menu free navigation (= natural to use)
- OS updates will be available for free

Nor Windows mobile nor others can provide those three (for different reason of course).

Of course the iPhone has some faults: the software is new and needs to be improved, it might be interesting to see a GPS module inside it, etc...

But this is the device of the future and Apple is leading the (r)evolution of handled devices.

As always Apple is selling hardware and software at the same time so is easier to make an optimized product and also is easier providing support and update (i don't think smart-phones producers would be happy if Microsoft or Symbian give OSs updates for free). On the other hand i think Apple will use the same strategy of OS X for desktop PCs (pardon... desktop Macs) while release for free only minor update like other OSs sellers.
For sure iPhone has a huge potential but this product will be updated with the improvments of the 2nd release? i don't think so. I want 3G support, MMS support, i want make some little videos ecc... iPhone is not the most suitable product.

Jobs said (during his keynote) they are releasing big updates for free -as they have done with the first iPods-.
Apple knows it still is not perfect (and that's why they are providing free updated) but they also know that it is already better than anything else (and that's why they have not delayed it).

Hi, sorry but playmates aren't such a good reason for me.

p.s.
Since iPhone needs contents like iPlayboy to survive why don't you tell Steve to add to Google Maps also location of prostitute on streets? Either without GPS it could be useful (Not to me, of course) :-)

So you don't like "payload", do you?

As your whole blog the last comment reports wrong information.
Please turn off your reality distortion field!

p.s.
The post was about iPhone but seems that because of its lack of feature you're trying to distract me form finding more than things Apple hasn't told you.

Apple will do the same thing it did with the first release of Mac OS X, release the first major update for free and nothing then.
Also Microsoft did the same thing in the past with Windows 95 and Windows 95 SR-2, it's nothing special.
Moreover iPhone has got too much lack to be consider the best smart phone available on the market.

If you listen to the January keynote of Steve at a certain point he says that people who buy an Apple TV or an iPhone should not be afraid to be cut out with software updates.

I think that the updates will be free for at least one or two years, when OS 10.6 comes out. We will se anyway.
