Windows Vista vs Mac Mini

There's no mistake in the title, I didn't mean "Windows Vista vs Mac OS X".

Why am I making such comparison?
Because (in Europe) Windows Vista, in its "full" version, costs 600 euros while a Mac Mini costs 619 euros.
More or less the same price but, but let's see the differences:

Buying Windows Vista "Ultimate" you get:
- ehm... Windows Vista

Buying a Mac Mini you get:
- Mac OS X Tiger full version
- iLife suite software which lets you edit movies, burn DVD with menus, create websites and blogs, record and handle music and organize digital pictures.
- Front Row (that transforms the Mac Mini into a Media Center)
- Intel Core Duo running at 1.66Ghz
- 512MB RAM
- HD 60GB
- Wifi and Bluetooth
- 4 USB 2.0 and 1 Firewire port
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Digital Audio (in and out)

...You might say "WIth Windows Vista I can do more things than on a Mac"... well: not true!
Be warned, Windows Vista officially supports only 104 applications.
This is less than the number of applications available for Mac OS 7!

Since you are buying a PC with the OS pre-installed you'd rather compare a pc with a Vista OEM and not retail license, with the same hardware.
Try to do it and you won't notice such a price difference.
The number of application supported by Windows Vista is growing up day by day, but you also have to check all the list: a lot of application has the Logo Works with Windows Vista that just works, without using Vista at 100%

wisher said the truth... Windows Vista Ultimate OEM costs 149 € (Mac OS X costs 129 €) and a standard PC with the same hardware of Mac Mini (and a normal chassis instead of the beatiful Apple chassis) costs the same price or less...

Windows Vista Ultimate OEM is still more expensive than Mac OS X.

What I really meant is that Windows Vista prices are just crazy.
You can get Mac OS X Tiger for 129€ (without student discount)... with the same money you cannot even get Windows Vista Home Basic!

The point is, why would you really want to spend any money on an unfinished product like Vista when you could be using a rock solid OS like OSX which is just about to take a further leap ahead.
I know, I have to use both and have come to the conclusion that Vista is a really poor effort. Out of principle I would not buy a copy of it which is priced so highly in Europe, which is Microsoft really taking the piss!

well thats in Europe, im in america, over here I can go to costco and buy the Windows Vista Home Premium for $140, a mac mini costs much more than that, PLUS I alredy have a computer, if I get a mac mini for $599 (as it says at http://www.apple.com/macmini/ ) then id have to buy a monitor dont you think and a mouse and a key board. I think ill go with the easy upgrade of Vista.

Even if Vista was free, you would be better off paying for the mac mini - 5 years and billions of dollars of wasted R&D - I can't believe heads have not rolled at M$ yet!

dont forget intel based macs can run xp if you really need to run a windows only program

You can probably install Vista on an Intel based Mac as well.

I have vista on my intel macbook. its terrible. i have all the features you get in vista, like the aeroglass and stuff, but the OS is nothing but a harder to use xp with tons of makeup on, that slows down the computer. i would rather use ubuntu than vista, but sometimes theres these annoying moments where theres a windows only program or something...

$599 (Mac Mini) + $79.99 (Parallels Mac) + $0 (old Windows XP CD) = 100% functionality (BootCamp works too)

$249.99 (Vista Ultimate Upgrade) + $$$ (compatible hardware, HD-DVD that works, more RAM) + $39.99 (1yr Kaspersky Internet Security support) = 100% hassle with DRM fiasco

Windows user since DOS, Mac user since OS X.

I'm confident saying that XP SP2 will stay at least for those who really know what the deal with Vista is. If I really need Vista, I'll wait for SP1 without the DRM crap on it.

It would be easier to sell my PC, keep the monitor and mouse, stash the hard drive for BootCamp, and get a Mac. Hell, 50% of my bleeding-edge PC hardware won't work on Vista anyway.

A Vista upgrade is never easy, just ask those who have tried it for themselves.

You can buy Windows Vista Basic for 89 € , it is a lower price compared to Mac OS X.

I've tried Windows Vista Premium on a MacBook Pro Core Duo 1.83 GHz with 1 GB 667 MHz and ATi Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128 MB of VRAM. It is better than Windows Xp on the same machine, faster, eye kandier ecc...
If you try Windows Vista on a low level machine you'll get worst performance compared to Windows Xp, on the other hand if you use Windows Vista on recent PCs (about 2 years old) you'll get better performances.

As soon as possibile i'll try Windows VIsta on my MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz and 1 GB 667 MHz (soon 2 GB 667 MHz), I'm very confident about good performances alsa with AeroGlass that is fully supported by tge Intel GMA950 installed on my laptop.

Where did you get the price?
I have this prices:
Home Basic 299€
Premium 359€
Business 499€
Ultimate 599€

Moreover Windows Vista Home Basic is just amazing: who is gonna pay 299€ (even if it was 99€!!) for a OS which doesn't even have the most attractive feature of Vista (Aero)?
I really believe that M$ thinks its users are stupid... Do you agree?

Filippo Sironi said...

OEM prices.
You are talcking about a Mac with the operating system, so talcking about a PC with the OEM operating system is correct.
Windows Vista Basic 69 €
Windows Vista Premium 89 €
Windows Vista Business 109 €
Windows Vista Ultimate 149 €
and watching these prices Windows Vista costs less than Windows Xp!

Filippo Sironi said...

Aero isn't the most important feature in Windows Vista and the bigger part of PC's users will disable it.
So I don't think Microsoft is going to make users fool.

Can anyone recommend the top Network Monitoring utility for a small IT service company like mine? Does anyone use Kaseya.com or GFI.com? How do they compare to these guys I found recently: N-able N-central performance management
? What is your best take in cost vs performance among those three? I need a good advice please... Thanks in advance!

I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our society, and I am 99% certain that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory decreases, the possibility of transferring our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could experience in my lifetime.

My friend and I were recently discussing about how technology has become so integrated in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.
